Road Safety Advocates in Bohot village |
|
On April 14, 2014 a joint road safety initiative of the Bohot "Road Safety Advocates" team and "Open Youth" will be carried out.
The initiative will take place in the square in front of the mayor’s office starting at 13:00 and will involve:
• alco- and drugvision goggles, simulating vision under the influence of
alcohol or drugs, and what is the effect on human capabilities;
• driving simulator, recreating risky driving situations;
• specially designed weight calculator, showing everyone how heavy
his/her body is in a collision with a given speed (50, 90 or 130 km/h);
• puzzle showing the participant the inability of a person to do two different activities at the same concentration.
The team consists of three pupils and their leader from “Anton
Strashimirov” primary school. They all dream of living in a place where
there is no danger for their lives as they go out on the street no
matter if as pedestrians or drivers. They wish to feel safe on the
streets, whenever they go to school, work or just for a walk. The team
will gladly share their knowledge and skills with their friends and
schoolmates and together improve and build further on their experience.
The team audited “Lyuben Karavelov” str. in front of their school for an
hour. The street is not a main street and thus not a busy one. Only 5
vehicles were observed and 15 pedestrians, no violations were committed
during this one hour. However the team sees it as a potential risk
place because of its proximity to the school. Some of the suggestions to
improve the spot include the installment of a speed hump, pedestrian
traffic light, painting of a crosswalk, and a repair of the existing,
but bent “Attention school zone” sign.
The project "Road Safety Advocates" is co-financed under the "Youth in
Action" program of the European Union, action 1.3 by NC "EYPI". It is
aimed at educating young people not only to detect problems but also to
look for solutions.
