On April 06, 2014 a joint road safety initiative of the Aldomirovtsi village "Road Safety Advocates" team and "Open Youth" will be carried out. 

The initiative will take place at the National cultural centre “Svetlina” “str. from 13:00 and will involve:

• alco- and drugvision goggles, simulating vision under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and what is the effect on human capabilities;

• driving simulator, recreating risky driving situations;

• specially designed weight calculator, showing everyone how heavy his/her body is in a collision with a given speed (50, 90 or 130 km/h);

• puzzle showing the participant the inability of a person to do two different activities at the same concentration.

The team consists of four people from Aldomirovtsi and its leader is Svetoslava Dimitrova. The young people audited the main street in the village “Aldomirovska” str. For a little over an hour they have observed and marked down violations by both pedestrians and drivers. Altogether 83 motorized vehicles were observed and 87 violations were registered. The most common problem is the use of safety belts, 34% of the drivers are not wearing one. 23% are not keeping a safe distance and 8% are talking on their cell phones without a hands free device. 16% of the drivers are speeding and 5% failed to stop at the STOP sign. The team arrived at the conclusion that many of the drivers are not using the safety belts. A great number of them are also speeding which is a big issues since cycling is a very common form of transportation and recreation especially favorite by kids in the village. On the other hand none of the cyclists were wearing helmets, reflective vests or any other type of safety equipment. The lack of crosswalks in the observed section of the road was a reason for the pedestrians to cross the street wherever they wished and the lack of sidewalk made them walk on the street.

The project "Road Safety Advocates" is co-financed under the "Youth in Action" program of the European Union, action 1.3 by NC "EYPI". It is aimed at educating young people not only to detect problems but also to look for solutions.
