On April 24, 2014 a joint road safety initiative of the Varna "Road Safety Advocates" team and "Open Youth" will be carried out. 

The initiative will take place in “First language school” starting from 10:00 and will involve:
• alco- and drugvision goggles, simulating vision under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and what is the effect on human capabilities;
• driving simulator, recreating risky driving situations;
• specially designed weight calculator, showing everyone how heavy his/her body is in a collision with a given speed (50, 90 or 130 km/h);
• puzzle showing the participant the inability of a person to do two different activities at the same concentration.

The team consists of young people with an active citizen’s position and an ambition to contribute to the safety on the road for all road users. For them travel is freedom and they will work hard to make it as safe as it can be. 
The youngsters audited “Petko Staynov” street in Varna. Within the hour, that they were observing the spot 46 motorized vehicles and 29 pedestrians were observed, jointly committing the staggering 213 violations. The major issue is parking; some 69% of the vehicles were unlawfully parked, 41% are changing lanes without signaling , 39% failed to stop at a Stop sign. Of all drivers 30% weren’t using the safety belts and 28% were going over the speed limit. On the other hand 43% of the pedestrians were crossing at unmarked locations.
The team arrived at the conclusion that this particular spot has a large concentration of disabled people going through it. It is essential that a raised crosswalk is constructed and that it is signaled by the appropriate signs and lit up during the dark hours. On the side walk there is a rail used by the blind for guidance but this rail is interrupted at places and needs to be fixed. At the crossroad of “Petko Staynov” street with “Todor Penev” the crosswalk is missing and the traffic sign marking its location is facing the wrong direction and can’t be seen by the drivers. “Todor Penev” street leads the disabled people to the nearby shops, thus it requires a guard rail all along the route. At the crossroad of “Petko Staynov” street with “Troleina” street the road markings and the crosswalk has been worn off and needs to be repainted and also a part of the speed hump placed there is missing. It would help a lot if a pedestrian traffic light with a sound signal is installed here and also the same type of pedestrian traffic light needs to be installed at the crossroad of “Troleina” street and “Hr. Smirnenski” boulevard.   
The project "Road Safety Advocates" is co-financed under the "Youth in Action" program of the European Union, action 1.3 by NC "EYPI". It is aimed at educating young people not only to detect problems but also to look for solutions.
