Road Safety Advocates in Veliko Tarnovo

On April 16, 2014 a joint road safety initiative of the Veliko Tarnovo "Road Safety Advocates" team and "Open Youth" will be carried out.

The initiative will take place in “Marno pole” park starting at 12:00 and will involve:
• alco- and drugvision goggles, simulating vision under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and what is the effect on human capabilities;
• driving simulator, recreating risky driving situations;
• specially designed weight calculator, showing everyone how heavy his/her body is in a collision with a given speed (50, 90 or 130 km/h);
• puzzle showing the participant the inability of a person to do two different activities at the same concentration.
The team consists of ninth grade students from the “Emilian Stanev” high school, who wish to work for the popularization of the road safety problems in the society by promoting information on the issue and at the same time enhancing the motivation of the people in their city to follow road safety regulations.
The team audited the crossroad of “Krakov” and “Maria Gabrovska” streets in Veliko Tarnovo for an hour, in which time they observed some 64 motorized vehicles and 15 pedestrians committing over 120 violations.  Major issue was the safety belt. 53% of all drivers weren’t wearing one. 27% failed to maintain proper distance and 17% were talking on their cell phones while driving. Of the 15 pedestrians, 11 were crossing at unmarked locations.  The team arrived at the conclusion that most of the drivers don’t yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, drive above the city limit and park on the sidewalks. As part of the solution to these problems the team suggests the implementation of more awareness raising campaigns.
The project "Road Safety Advocates" is co-financed under the "Youth in Action" program of the European Union, action 1.3 by NC "EYPI". It is aimed at educating young people not only to detect problems but also to look for solutions.
