Any person who holds the nationality of a European Union (EU) country is automatically also an EU citizen as per the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU. EU citizenship is additional to and does not replace national citizenship. It is for each EU country to lay down the conditions for the acquisition and loss of nationality of that country.
The EU citizenship brings with it a number of important rights. In order to introduce the last to the European citizens in an interesting and understandable way, a consortium of European youth organizations has developed the stories in a book, which is to be published very soon both on- and offline. The Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union entails the right to:

•move and reside freely within the EU (story, developed by Hajdúsági Hallgatókért és Civilekért Egyesület, Hungary);

•vote for and stand as a candidate in European Parliament and municipal elections (story, developed by Open Youth, Bulgaria);

•be protected by the diplomatic and consular authorities of any other EU country (story, developed by Stichting Responsible Young Drivers, the Netherlands);

•petition the European Parliament (story developed by TOP-25, Belgium).

•the European Ombudsman (story developed by Open Youth, Bulgaria).
