On April 22, 2014 a joint road safety initiative of the Ruse "Road Safety Advocates" team and "Open Youth" will be carried out. 

The initiative will take place in “P.Penev” professional high school starting at 14:30 and will involve:
• alco- and drugvision goggles, simulating vision under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and what is the effect on human capabilities;
• driving simulator, recreating risky driving situations;
• specially designed weight calculator, showing everyone how heavy his/her body is in a collision with a given speed (50, 90 or 130 km/h);
• puzzle showing the participant the inability of a person to do two different activities at the same concentration.
The team consists of pupils from the high school, led by their teacher, Mr. Baev. The young auditors observed the area near the school and have seen nearly 200 vehicles and 70 pedestrians committing 143 traffic violations. No violations were committed by the pedestrians however; this is partly due to the fact that the sidewalks around the school area are fitted with fence and the pedestrians can only cross at the crosswalks. Out of the drivers 18% changed lanes without signaling first, 10% failed to maintain a safe distance, 23% didn’t use their head lights and 13% were speeding. 
According to the team of auditors more frequent police checks, stationary radars and cameras at the high risk spots as well as special crossings for disabled people would increase the safety of the spot. 
The project "Road Safety Advocates" is co-financed under the "Youth in Action" program of the European Union, action 1.3 by NC "EYPI". It is aimed at educating young people not only to detect problems but also to look for solutions.
