From 25th to 29th of July, 2012 “Open Youth” and the "Traffic Police" department, General Directorate "National Police" of Ministry of Interior, together with the regional "Traffic Police" departments of the Police directorates in Plovdiv, Sliven, Burgas and Haskovo, held a joint campaign under the motto "Drive responsibly and courteously". The actions were specialized police operations using the broader control in combination with positive intervention of representatives of "Open Youth" towards encouraging responsible driving and reduction of road aggression at the beginning of the active summer season. The initiative started with a press conference in Sofia (25 of July) in the building of the General Directorate "National Police", where an overview of traffic accidents for the past six months was presented. GD “National Police” announced that the victims of road accidents decreased by 44% compared to the last year for the same period. From January 1, 2012 to July 24, 2012 293 people died in 3146 severe accidents - 284 less than for the same period last year. For the past six months of 2012 the most dangerous were third-class and municipal roads. 35% of the fatalities and 40% of the injuries have occurred precisely on such roads, not on highways and first- and second-class roads. 42% of victims of car crashes have occurred in single collisions - their car went out of the way or has crashed into a roadside tree. For Europe, the victims of such crashes are below 20%. During the operations the most frequent violations were driving without a seatbelt; using mobile phones while driving; children, traveling without baby seats; missing liability insurance. Overall, most of the drivers were precise and accepted the positive message of the campaign with a smile, also the stress-balls, as well the 10 precepts for tolerant driving which they received by the representatives of „Open Youth". They appealed the drivers to be more responsible, smiling and tolerant on the road and Kostadin Krastev Association also added: "Tolerance is contagious". So, let drivers more often to send it out to each other. The campaign "Drive responsibly and courteously" is part of the international project AVENUE, supported by DG "Mobility and Transport" of the European Commission and of the overall program "Drive responsibly" of "Open Youth". Its launch coincided with the Fourth European Road Safety Day to be held by the European Commission in Nicosia (Cyprus), entitled " Active Involvement of Youth in Road Safety", and within which "Open Youth" was represented by two participants.
